I founded Simple Money Hacks with a mission to provide simple yet effective solutions to common money challenges that people face.
Based in the UK, I focus on helping individuals learn how to cut costs, budget effectively, save money, start their own businesses, and ultimately achieve financial freedom.
But to truly overcome financial troubles, we must understand the reasons behind our financial choices.
As a second-generation immigrant born in the UK but raised in Nigeria, I faced numerous financial hurdles upon returning to the UK at 25. I encountered challenges such as unfamiliarity with the UK money system, difficulty securing well-paid graduate-level employment due to my Nigerian education, and the burden of debt accumulated from financing my UK degree and accounting qualification. Additionally, the breakdown of my marriage thrust me into the role of a single parent, with financial responsibilities extending beyond my immediate family. However, a pivotal moment changed everything.
It was the first week of the month. I managed to pay some of my most overdue bills and realised I had spent all my money, with no money left for the next 24 days.
My monthly expenses exceeded my income. Overwhelmed with fear and despair, I broke down, weeping like a child.
That’s when my oldest daughter, about 10 at the time, rushed in to comfort me. I confessed that I had no money to feed her and her sister.
To my surprise, she responded with unwavering optimism, saying, “But we have all the leftovers in the freezer.” It hit me like a lightning bolt—we did have a resource, our food for the month, hidden in the freezer.
That moment became the turning point. I knew something had to change.
To tackle debt head-on, I employed a combination of tools and strategies. I started by creating a budget to gain an accurate financial snapshot of my situation. My debt at that point was over £40,000. My salary at the time was £21,000 per year.
Then, I focused on the easiest fixes that would yield immediate results. I began packing my lunch to work, saving me £150 monthly. I made tough choices, like selling my car and downgrading my phone contract.
I contacted all my utility providers and negotiated lower deals, threatening to leave if necessary. Surprisingly, they all agreed to reduced tariffs. In my pursuit of financial stability, I even rented out my bedroom and slept on the floor of my living room for over a year. Every extra penny earned or saved went directly to paying off debt. Ultimately, I managed to secure a 33% pay increase (about £500 per month) by demonstrating how I saved my company a quarter of a million pounds annually.
With over 25 years of experience as a finance professional, including working at Halifax Bank UK as a banking and mortgage specialist and as an ACCA-certified accountant in corporate finance, I have gained invaluable insights into successful entrepreneurship and business ownership. I have also proudly run free Financial Freedom Classes, helping individuals like Demelza transform their outlook on budgeting and money management, creating lasting change.
“Thanks, Joyce, for being my guiding light on the path to financial freedom. Your support and expertise have transformed my outlook on budgeting and money management. I used to be afraid of facing my finances, but with your help, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how to effectively manage my money. Now, I’m proud to say that I’m saving each month towards my dream of owning a home, all while living within my means. Your wisdom and insight have been invaluable on this incredible journey. Joyce, you are truly super-awesome! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
After about 4 years of intense focus to get my finances in order, I paid off all my debt, had money in my saving account, and life started to feel good again.
I started looking forward to being able to take time off and go on vacation. At this point, I hadn’t had a single day of vacation for over 12 years.
However, just as I began to enjoy the fruits of my labour, life dealt me another blow.
During a routine check-up, I received the devastating news: I had breast cancer. It felt like one blow after another.
Thankfully, I fully recovered from breast cancer, but the experience left an indelible mark on my perspective. It made me realise the importance of living every day to the fullest. Before my diagnosis, I always put off doing nice things for myself, thinking there would always be time later.
However, the diagnosis shattered that illusion and taught me that the present moment is all we truly have.
It ignited a deep desire to embrace life’s beauty and possibilities.
Driven by my newfound perspective, I consciously decided to work fewer hours and explore the vast wonders of this world. Being free from debt and living comfortably on less allowed me to choose a life of freedom.
I learned how to prioritise experiences over material possessions and design a life I love. Today, I am passionate about sharing these insights and empowering others to do the same.
