5 Smart Ways to Grow Your Income Faster (Without Burning Out)
Saving money, extreme frugality and strict budgeting can only get you so far.
But at some point, you can’t squeeze any more juice out of that lemon.
If you want to build real financial freedom, you’ve got to grow your income.
Now, I’m not talking about working 18-hour days or starting a business tomorrow (unless you want to).
I’m talking about smart, strategic moves that multiply your money without multiplying your stress.

Here are 5 proven ways to grow your income faster—I’ve used some of these myself to overcome financial challenges.
1. Monetise What You Already Know
Here’s a truth we don’t hear enough:
You’re already sitting on money-making skills.
Whether it’s:
- Excel skills you use at work
- Your knack for writing resumes
- How you helped your cousin plan her wedding for under £3k
Someone out there would gladly pay for that knowledge.
Here’s what worked for me:
I’ve worked in banking and finance for over 25 years, and I love helping friends and family manage their money. I’ve done everything from budgeting and paying off debt to helping first-time buyers save for a deposit.
At first, I felt awkward about charging for it. I thought, “They’re already struggling with money, how can I ask them to pay?” But over time, I noticed a pattern: the people I coached for free were less committed. The ones who paid? They showed up, did the work, and got real results.
That shift changed everything. Charging for my time wasn’t just about the income — it also created better outcomes for my clients. It became a win-win. That’s when I launched my one-to-one coaching and started earning from something I already loved doing.
🗹 Action Tip: Write down three skills people often compliment you on.
Then, ask yourself: “How can I package this as a service or product?”
2. Negotiate Your Current Salary
Before chasing four side hustles, start with the income stream you already have — your job.
Let’s be honest:
Most people are underpaid not because their employer can’t afford more but because they never ask.
According to a 2023 report by Totaljobs, only 1 in 5 UK workers negotiate their pay. And those who do? They’re more likely to get it.
I understand why it’s hard to ask. Women are often taught to be grateful for what we have. As a Black woman, I’ve worried about job security and not wanting to seem “difficult.” But the truth is, if you’re delivering value — especially if your role keeps growing — you deserve to be compensated fairly.
Here’s how I did it:
I worked in the accounts team and noticed we could cut costs on rent and telecoms. So, I proposed a plan to my manager to save 50%. I ended up saving 75%! That led to a raise of £800/month. It was life-changing.
Other ways to boost your income at work:
- Apply for internal roles with higher pay.
- Let your boss know you want to grow.
- Find mentors who can help you step up.
But be wise. If your manager isn’t supportive or sees you as someone who should just “stay put,” it might be time to look outside your company.
🗹 Action Tip:
- Track your wins at work (emails, KPIs, successful projects).
- Show how you’ve saved or made the company money.
- Research salary benchmarks on sites like Glassdoor or Reed.
- Book a meeting with your manager and come prepared.
You don’t have to wait for your annual review. Sometimes, one bold ask = thousands more a year.
3. Start a Micro Side Hustle
Not every side hustle needs to be a big business.
Sometimes, all it takes is a small idea that brings in consistent income.
Here are a few low-lift, high-impact side hustles to try:
- Freelance writing or design
- Tutoring (online or in-person)
- Selling digital templates or eBooks
- Hosting online workshops or webinars
What we did:
My daughter created a simple piece of artwork and listed it on Etsy. Designing took her two hours, and now it earns her monthly passive income. It doesn’t need to be perfect — just useful or beautiful enough that someone finds value in it.
🗹 Action Tip: Ask yourself: “What can I create once that keeps earning again and again?”
4. Rent Out a Room (Tax-Free!)
This one made a big difference in my income.
Years ago, I rented out a spare room in my UK flat and charged £400/month — the max allowed under the Rent a Room Scheme at the time, which was £4,800/year tax-free.
Now? That tax-free allowance has increased to £7,500/year. That’s up to £625/month in your pocket without paying a penny in tax.
I rented to a student, but you could also rent to a professional or someone in transition. As long as it’s your main home and they live with you, you’re eligible.
🗹 Action Tip:
- Got a spare room? Consider renting to a lodger.
- Learn more at gov.uk/rent-room-in-your-home
- List your room on SpareRoom.co.uk or OpenRent
Bonus: You’re turning space you already have into a monthly income stream, and no extra skills are required.
5. Put Your Money to Work (Start Investing Early)
Let your money do the heavy lifting.
Even small amounts, invested consistently, can grow faster than just saving alone.
📈 According to MoneySavingExpert, if you invested £100/month with a 6% return, you’d have over £23,000 in 15 years.
🗹 Getting started in the UK:
- Open a Stocks and Shares ISA for tax-free growth
- Use beginner-friendly platforms like Moneybox, Trading 212, or Vanguard
- Start with index funds if you’re unsure where to begin
You don’t need to be rich to start. Begin with what you have, even if it’s £25/month.
Consistency beats perfection. Always.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Wait for the “Perfect” Time
You might wait forever if you’re waiting to feel 100% ready before increasing your income.
Here’s the truth: Growth comes when you move despite uncertainty.
I didn’t feel “ready” when I ran my first workshop. I just knew I had something to share, and that decision shifted everything.
So don’t hold yourself back. Choose one idea from this list and take action.
